OCD Treatment Without Drugs

Ocd Treatment Massapequa, NY

OCD Treatment can be done without any drugs with treatments like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and psychotherapy. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a behavioral issue that is associated with compulsions and obsessions. It makes people spend a significant amount of time dealing with obsessive thoughts or compulsions, limiting their productivity in areas that matter like school, work, and relationships.

A non-medication approach to OCD treatment

The obsessions that come with OCD include intrusive thoughts that can interrupt what a person is trying to focus on. Examples of such behavior include frequently returning home to check if the door is locked or a strong impulse to do something you do not want to do. Obsessive thoughts can be difficult to ignore, and they can lead to anxiety.

Compulsions are mental or physical actions that are performed to eliminate intrusive thoughts and reduce the anxiety that comes with them. For example, removing sharp objects from view due to obsessive thoughts about someone getting harmed.

Over time, compulsive behaviors can morph into rituals and become a priority over other activities that add more value to a person’s life. It can lead to some people giving up on relationships and work, but a few are able to still maintain their work and social lives while struggling with compulsive behavior.

Treatment options

Understanding how OCD work makes it easier to administer effective treatments. Brain scans show that people with OCD tend to have overactivity in some parts of their brain. Calming things in these areas typically brings relief from its symptoms. Popular non-medication treatment options for OCD include:

1. TMS therapy

During this treatment, an electromagnetic coil is placed on the patient’s head and used to send magnetic pulses into the brain. Targeting the pre-supplementary motor area in the brain seems to deliver the best results for people dealing with OCD. Most report fewer symptoms after treatment, and this usually lasts for a minimum of three months.

OCD treatment plans typically include getting five treatments a week. Each treatment lasts for about 20 minutes, except the first which might take up to an hour. Patients typically have to get treatments for up to seven weeks – about 36 treatments total – for significant relief of OCD symptoms.

TMS therapy does not require the use of anesthetics or sedatives since it is a non-invasive procedure. Most patients do not experience significant side effects following treatment.

2. Psychotherapy

Also known as talk therapy, this can be used to teach patients better ways to cope with intrusive thoughts and compulsions. Having intrusive thoughts is normal. The problem is people with OCD make these thoughts significant in their heads. Cognitive behavior therapy can be used to teach patients new ways to process their thoughts.
