How Geriatric Psychiatry Can Help in Dealing With Loss

Geriatric psychiatry can help the aging population deal with issues of loss. People of all ages might need help with mental health problems throughout different periods of their lives. However, older people usually face more difficulties. For this, an individual would need to schedule an appointment with a doctor who focuses on geriatric psychiatry.

Geriatric psychiatry

Geriatric psychiatry is a field of medicine that focuses on both the psychological and biological aspects of the aging process, according to the American Psychiatric Association. Psychiatrists who work in this field deal with patients who have either chronic or acute health conditions. Many of those patients also suffer from psychiatric disturbances that go hand in hand with getting older.

Types of loss

As people age, they begin to see an increasing number of family members and friends pass away. As one can imagine, that takes a significant toll on a person, not only mentally but physically as well. Some people lose so many loved ones that they struggle just to get through another day. Fortunately, seeing a geriatric psychiatrist helps both the patient and the caregiver cope with any hardship.

There is another type of loss that many aging adults need help with — the loss of home. A lot of people bought a house when they were young and raised a family there. They enjoyed time with their sons, daughters and grandkids, only to have it “ripped away” in their minds. If someone goes into a nursing home or assisted living facility, they often experience great loss and find it hard to get used to their new environment. In that scenario, an individual may need support from a psychiatrist.

Losing independence is also a loss that the elderly face. Instead of driving, doing their own shopping and taking trips by themselves, they have to depend on other people. For some adults, this is beyond bearable. Trying to cope without the aid of geriatric psychiatry is simply not a possibility. For any type of loss, aging adults have a viable source of help.

Who benefits from treatment?

Many people turn to geriatric psychiatry for help. Statistics released by The National Center for Biotechnology Information show that 72.1 percent of the patients are Caucasian females after the age of 65. It was also shown that roughly 59 percent of geriatric patients had received psychiatric treatments before. Although women seem to seek help from a psychiatrist more often than men do, treatment is available to any aging adult.

Taking care of yourself

If you have passed the age of 60 and find yourself struggling with some kind of loss, it is important to understand that you can turn to practitioners of geriatric psychiatry for help. The doctors in this field are not there to judge but to provide patients with information and tools. In addition, they guide people to get through tough times so that they can move on without feeling burdened by loss.
