5 Tips for Relieving Your Social Anxiety

Wondering what to do about your social anxiety? According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, the distinctive feature of social anxiety disorder, also called social phobia, is intense anxiety or fear of being judged, negatively evaluated or rejected in a social or performance situation.

It is one of the most common anxiety disorders American adults are living with and more often than not affects people during their teenage years. social anxiety can easily get in the way of your ability to properly function, lowering your overall quality of life.

About social anxiety

While many people experience a little bit of nervousness, fear or embarrassment when they are out in public or in social situations, it is when these feelings interfere with their ability to function that their anxiety becomes a problem. Signs and symptoms vary from one person to another and can range from the very mild to the very extreme.

A few of the more common emotional symptoms experienced include fear of meeting people, fear of being in places where there are large groups of people and experiencing panic attacks. Common physical symptoms include heart palpitations, stomach pain and overall confusion.

The following is a list of beneficial tips that anyone can use to help relieve their social anxiety.

1. Use controlled breathing techniques

Using controlled breathing techniques can help manage anxiety symptoms. Simply breathe in slowly for seven to eight seconds, hold this breath for two to three seconds and then slowly exhale for five to six seconds. Repeat several times as necessary.

2. Create an enjoyable exercise routine

Participating in physical activities is known to help reduce anxiety, making it a great idea to create an exercise routine that promotes good health. The routine should be enjoyable so it will be followed and can include other forms of exercise, like yoga.

3. Only attend small functions, gatherings

Those who experience anxiety when attending large social functions should make it a goal to only attend smaller social functions. Once they feel comfortable participating in smaller gatherings, they can begin to explore their large social gathering options.

4. Make positive lifestyle changes

Making positive lifestyle changes can help support a healthy body and a healthy mind. A few suggestions include limiting one’s caffeine intake, eating foods that are high in nutrition, getting plenty of sleep every night and quitting smoking.

5. Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way for those who experience social anxiety to get out of the house and get their mind focused on something else besides the anxiety they are feeling.
