Do You Have Bipolar Disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be difficult. It can make it hard to spend time with family and maintain relationships. It can also make it difficult to maintain employment. After all, when struggling with an issue that impacts how a person feels, thinks and behaves, every day can be a struggle. We get that and are not here to judge but to help.

We help our patients who are living with this disorder to regain control, balance and their quality of life. We want anyone who is struggling to give us a call to see how we can help. In the meantime, here are a few questions we are asked on a regular basis.

What is a bipolar disorder?

This is a mental disorder where a person sometimes feels very excited and happy and other times feels incredibly down and depressed.

How does a person know if they have bipolar disorder?

We recommend scheduling an appointment with our office so that we can conduct a consult to determine if a person is suffering from this condition. Typically, the easiest way to tell is if a person is constantly having mood swings and flipping between extreme happiness and extreme sadness on a regular basis. Other symptoms include:

  • Having very high energy and then feeling lethargic
  • Not needing to sleep
  • Being out of touch with reality
  • Not having motivation
  • Losing interest in work, family and other normal activities
  • Moods can switch daily, weekly or even monthly

How long does the condition last?

Some people suffer from this disorder for a lifetime while others only experience it for a couple of years. Typically, treatment can help to minimize the symptoms of it but in some patients, it may never go away.

How is it treated?

There are a variety of treatment solutions for people who are bipolar. They may include individual or group therapy sessions, taking prescription medication and using natural remedies to help maintain balance. We also recommend getting plenty of sleep and eating a healthy diet since nutrition can play an important role in a person's overall well-being.

Naturally, each patient is different and so the best way to talk about treatment options is to schedule an appointment with our clinic. While here, we will discuss a person's lifestyle, symptoms and make recommendations that we feel will be the most effective for providing immediate and long-term relief.

Appointments with a psychiatrist should be part of any treatment. They are important initially and on an ongoing basis. This is a condition that will not necessarily go away. Once a patient begins to feel better and to gain control over his or her life, maintaining those feelings or that calm state will require help. We are here to provide it over the long-term. We are essentially a partner in our patients' ongoing health and quality of life.
