A Promising Antidepressant Alternative

Antidepressant Alternative Massapequa, NY

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an effective antidepressant alternative. It is an FDA approved treatment for depression, anxiety, and a range of behavioral issues like obsessive-compulsive disorder.

It is typically prescribed when a patient does not want to treat their mental health condition with medication, reacts negatively to antidepressants, or is not getting the desired result from antidepressants.

TMS is a non-invasive treatment that does not require the use of sedatives or anesthetics. There is no need for the surgical implantation of electrodes, and it does not lead to side effects like memory loss.

TMS as an antidepressant alternative

TMS treatments involve using a device that contains electromagnetic coils to send pulses into the patient’s brain. When these pulses are sent at regular intervals, the treatment is known as repetitive TMS or rTMS.

The magnetic pulses created by the device are sent to the part of the brain that handles mood. Sending these waves there can alter neurons in the brain, reducing the symptoms of depression.

Published trials show that TMS can be an effective way to treat depression even when other treatment options have failed. It is typically recommended when a patient reacts badly to antidepressants or their symptoms are not improving. It is covered by insurance providers as a treatment for depression if four or more types of antidepressants or other medication for depression have failed.

About 50% of people who are unable to alleviate their symptoms with medication experience fewer symptoms of depression after undergoing TMS therapy. About a third of these people become completely free of their symptoms after transcranial magnetic stimulation.

TMS should not be confused with a cure for depression since there is no guarantee the patient’s symptoms will not return in the future. Positive results from TMS therapy typically last for about a year following treatment.

Depression is not simply caused by chemical imbalances inside the brain. It is often the result of a combination of social, psychological, and biological factors. A person’s genetics, coping skills, relationships, and lifestyle choices contribute to their depression. Living a healthier lifestyle, learning better coping skills through behavioral therapy, and forming a support network helps to keep patients free of the symptoms of depression.

The process

TMS therapy is an outpatient procedure that does not require any type of surgery or recovery period. Patients are awake throughout their treatments, and there is no need for sedatives or anesthetics. The typical treatment program consists of getting treatments five times a week for up to seven weeks. Most patients experience reduced depression symptoms by the time their treatment program is over.

The first treatment typically lasts anywhere between 40 to 60 minutes. Other treatments are typically 20 minutes or less. Patients are seated during the treatment and an electromagnetic coil is used to send pulses into their prefrontal cortex. These pulses stimulate nerve cells in the brain, alleviating symptoms of depression.
